Service Learning

Seattle Schools require all students to complete 60 hours of service learning in order to graduate. Students who transfer to Ingraham from out of district need not complete all 60 hours, but must complete 15 hours for each year they are enrolled in a Seattle public high school. Students are given the freedom and responsibility to complete those 60 hours any time prior to graduation, including during summers. NOTE: This requirement cannot be waived. Service learning is giving time, without pay, to a non-profit or government agency. Seniors need to have completed their 60 hours by the middle of May prior to graduation. We urge seniors, of course, not to wait until the last minute to take care of this! Students can monitor their service hours on the Source.

To document completed service learning hours, students should complete the Service Learning Recording Sheet (below), make a copy to keep for their records, and then turn in the completed form to their school counselor. Forms are also available in the Counseling Office. Students may count as service learning any activity for which they do not earn school credit or get paid.

All non-IB students need 60 Hours of Service Learning. The recording sheet for your 60 hours is attached below. If you complete the IB diploma, you are required to complete 150 CAS hours which replace the requirement of 60 Service Learning Hours.

PE Waiver

There are a few different reasons why you can waive PE. The most popular being participating in a sport. An Ingraham based sport just needs the coach signature verifying you’ve done the full season. An outside sport needs the signature as well as documentation of 80 hours of practice and competition. If you’re waiving PE for a medical reason, you’ll need a doctor’s note explaining the circumstances.

The IB Diploma also waives PE and the PE competency test – You Do Not Need to Fill Out a Form for this Type of Waiver.

Filling out a PE waiver does not give you credit. It simply marks the requirement as being complete, giving you space in your schedule to take a different class of your choosing.
