Supports for Students and Reporting Safety Concerns

Dear Ingraham Students and Families,

Thank you to the more than 200 students, families, and staff who joined us for the Ingraham community meeting. I am grateful for the engagement and support of the Seattle Public Schools community in the face of the tragic death of one of our students on November 8.

Several families requested an anonymous way to report safety concerns. You or your student can use the SPS Safe Schools Hotline 206-252-0510 to report any threats to SPS schools. This phone number is managed 24 hours a day, 7 days a week.

You also asked for a reminder on any supportive resources to help sustain you during the holiday break. The SPS Coordinated School Health team collected some suggestions to help families support their students after gun violence:

How to Help if You Are Concerned About Your Student

  • Listen and validate concerns: Respond honestly to any thoughts or fears expressed in an age-appropriate manner. Identify social supports (e.g., family members, friends) with whom they can discuss their feelings. Don’t push your child to discuss how they feel. Different people will have different reactions.
  • Model and practice brave behavior: Parents/guardians can model brave behaviors by continuing to participate in community activities. Encourage your child to engage in these activities as well.
  • Have a conversation about media: Repeated exposure to the media content can exacerbate concerns. Parents/guardians should do their best to have conversations about what they are seeing in the media and help students make informed decisions about the media they are engaging with.
  • Access mental health supports (if needed): If fears are causing significant impairment (e.g., impacting social, occupational, or educational functioning), support from a mental health profession may be warranted.

The following resources offer a collection of local agencies that can help support our community.

I am encouraged by the compassion, strength, and resilience of this school community.

During times of need, each of us is challenged to be there for one another. Let us try to give grace when we can, knowing that others may be struggling in unseen ways.

Thank you and best wishes as we head into the long weekend. We will continue to work on your behalf to ensure that better and stronger days for Ingraham and all SPS schools are ahead.

With Gratitude,

Bev Redmond
Interim Chief of Staff/Assistant Superintendent of Public Affairs

Dear Ingraham Students and Families,

This was our first day back since last week’s tragic shooting on campus. As we continue to collectively grieve and take our next steps forward, it was very comforting to see students back at Ingraham where they belong. Many students participated in today’s walkout against gun violence at City Hall, and they did so in a respectful and orderly manner.

The school day by all indications was calm and reflective. The presence of extra security and counseling services as well as time set aside for students to begin processing their thoughts and feelings was a great help toward making today’s return a reality for our students and staff.

There is no timeline on the need for professional mental health support after a tragedy. We will continue to provide these same supportive measures for the foreseeable future.

The outpouring of support has been very helpful. Please know that our neighboring and surrounding communities are here for us.  Here are the services that will be available this week:

Week of Nov. 14 Supports for Students

  • Additional mental health providers and social workers will be at Ingraham to support students, families, and staff
  • Ingraham educators will share social-emotional lessons during class
  • Ingraham’s Kaiser School Based Health Center is available on site from 8:30 a.m. – 4 p.m. daily
  • Harborview Assault and Trauma Center is available for individuals affected by trauma contact 206-744-1600.

Psycho-education for Families

Additional Community Support Resources

As the week progresses, I will begin to share information on plans for an upcoming community conversation.

Thank you for your patience, resilience and continued support as our school responds to our students and community’s needs. I am forever grateful for your resolve and strength during this incredibly sensitive time. Please contact me if you have any questions.

Sincerely,

Mr. Floe

Dear Ingraham Students and Families,

Our school community is still reeling from the loss of one of our own. I know many in our community will have upset emotions and questions. I will try to answer questions that I can. We are all experiencing a wide range of emotions. Supporting student wellness has been and will remain my highest priority.

Before our students and staff return on Monday, I want to take a moment to share some of the plans we have in place to aid students through the weekend and the week ahead. Our goal is to provide a safe space while giving the community the time to heal.

Monday’s School Day

We will follow our regular bell schedule on Monday. Additional security will be on campus and visible throughout the week.

Continued supportive mental health providers, social workers, and expansive supplemental community supports will continue to be available for students, families, and staff. Grief support will also be provided. During 1st and 2nd period, our teachers will be talking with students about their experience.

Tips for Talking with Students

I know this is an unsettling time for families. This event has been impactful for both students and adults. Take time to check in with yourself and acknowledge your own feelings. This allows you to approach the conversation with your student with empathy.

Students and families have a range of different ways they may be responding to trauma. Questions you can ask to support your student:

  • Tell me how you’re feeling right now.
  • How are you feeling about going back to school on Monday?
  • What can you do when you are feeling stressed, sad, or anxious?
  • How can I support you best?

Some questions may come up that you might not have the answer to or feel comfortable answering, here are some ways in which you can respond to tough questions:

  • I’m not sure how to answer …
  • We must respect and honor the privacy of the family during this difficult time.
  • Sometimes we may not have all the information …
  • It sounds like you have a lot of questions, my wonder is if it would be helpful to meet with one of the available school support resources?

Here are some available resources this weekend for families to utilize.
