Letter From the Nurse

Welcome from the Health Office

Dear Parents, Guardians and Students,

Welcome to Ingraham High School. My name is Janet Boyett, I am your school nurse. In addition to school nursing, I have a background in the ICU taking care of patients with traumatic injuries, burns, bone marrow transplants and on the lighter side, many summers of camp nursing.

My job is to support you and your child’s health and learning this year, and I hope that I can help you stay healthy during these challenging times. I look forward to meeting you in person when we are able, but I can speak to you on the phone, or through online platforms. The School Nurse position at Ingraham has been shared by two nurses over the past couple of years. We will know soon, who will be overlapping on Wednesdays and working on Fridays, in the meantime, I will handle paperwork and questions you may have. I can be reached:

Monday-Wednesday 8:30-4:00
Phone: 206 252-3887

As we begin this extraordinary start to the new school year, please know that Seattle School nurses have been working behind the scenes to prepare for a safe return to in-class education and strategizing to support students and families during remote learning. I am already missing the hustle and bustle of high schoolers whose energy and enthusiasm are infectious. And there is that word:infectious.

The COVID-19 pandemic has made clear the importance of health and health safety. This year at Ingraham, health and safety is of highest priority. During remote learning, I will be reaching out to check in with students who have a health concern and to connect with students and families who may need extra support. Please let me know if you would like to hear from me.

COVID-19 Resources

I can help you sort out possible COVID-19 symptoms and to access help for testing. There are a wide variety of resources on the King County website.

You can access free COVID-19 screening through the Public Health SCAN program for your children. Use the code SCANKIDS as a quick way to bypass the daily limits for testing.

Annual Health Information Form

To prepare for a healthy and safe 2020-21 school year, please provide updated health and medication information on your child before the first day of school in September. Please complete the Annual Student Health Update form either online or in PowerSchool (Sept 1-30), or by letting me know by email or phone.

If there is a known life-threatening concern such as diabetes, seizures or anaphylaxis, if I have not already done so, I will be contacting you before school begins. If I have not reached out to you please contact me. I am requesting the care plan and medication authorizations to be signed by the Sept 8th, with some flexibility if needed. Please let me know if I can be of any assistance. Providers can fax any paperwork to my confidential fax: 206 743-3130 .

Expanded Health Services: Ingraham Teen Health Center

Separate from the School Nurse, the Ingraham Teen Health Center (ITHC) is a safe, confidential place where students from Ingraham can receive: well-child exam, sports physicals, immunizations and flu shots, mental health support, reproductive health care, access for health insurance, and prescriptions for medications for chronic conditions such as asthma. Operated by Public Health and Kaiser Permanente, the ITHC is located next to the attendance and counseling office. Students must register at the ITHC before receiving services. The form is available on-line, in person or by request. A parent or guardian must sign a consent form for the student to be seen, except in the areas of mental health and sexual health where minors can self-consent per state law. To make an appointment at Ingraham’s Teen Health Center call: 206 477-9715

All SPS students can access mental and physical health services through our many school-based health centers.

Immunizations

During this time of remote learning one of the most important things you can do is to make sure your student’s immunizations are up to date. Schedule a flu shot for your student and family members. Those two things will help keep you and our community healthy.

We want to protect every student from communicable diseases especially during COVID-19. If your child is lacking school-district required vaccines, I will contact you. It is possible that I am missing records of vaccines your child has already had. There are teen vaccines that are not required for school but are recommended by the Center for Disease Control. These are: Hepatitis A (2 doses), Meningococcal B (2 doses), Meningococcal A (1 or 2 doses), HPV (2 or 3 doses). All of these are available through the School-based health centers or through vaccination clinics.

Strengths and Difficulty Questionnaire (SDQ)

I may use the SDQ screening tool in grade 9 to help identify students who may need additional supports to thrive academically and socially. Parents and school staff may use this tool to give feedback about how well the student in any grade is doing in four areas: emotions, focus, behavior and getting along with others. You can see more information about this screening tool at www.sdqinfo.com.

If you do NOT want the SDQ given to your child, please call or email me with your student’s name and I will send you an exemption form to complete and return.

Medications at School

Taking medications at school regularly or as needed? We must have an ‘Authorization for Medication’ form on file with the school nurse. You can email me and or fax this information to me. Though we do not know when we will resume in-person learning, for emergency medications, please have these forms back to me at the start of the year.

Again, welcome! Please let me know if I can be of assistance to you.

In good health,
