Running Start is a program where students can take courses at any community college (most of our students enroll in one of the following: North Seattle Community College, Seattle Central Community College, or Shoreline Community College) for college and high school credit. Each school has a slightly different process, so make sure you keep in contact with your counselor throughout this process. They will have to make your college schedule and sign off on the schedule with you. Appointments are required when meeting with your school counselor to discuss Running Start.

Running Start Facts:

  • You can take a total of 15 credits at the college level per quarter.
  • Running Start is a program in connection with Seattle Public Schools. SPS pays for tuition of the courses. The student will be required to pay for books required for the courses.
  • Students must meet placement standards at your desired community college to qualify to take college level courses. SBAC, SAT, ACT or the college’s placement test can be used to meet this requirement. See specific college Testing Center webpage for further details.
  • The student is required to provide transportation to and from the community college and IHS.
  • Students can start Running Start at the beginning of their junior year (for a total of 2 years: junior and senior year).

After going through the running start information from your college site, if you have follow up questions, please contact your IHS counselor!
